Whole lines, half lines and quarter lines
An Asian handicap line can be a whole number (0, -1), a half (-0.5, +1.5) or a quarter (-0.25, -0.75). Whole and half lines are simple. On a whole line a margin that exactly matches it is a refund. On a half line there’s always a winner.
A quarter line is two bets in one. Your stake is split in half and placed on the two nearest lines. A bet on -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. Both halves can win, both can lose, or one can win and the other be refunded, which is why quarter lines pay half-wins and half-losses.

A staking example helps. Put 100 on a line at odds of 1.90, which is just an example price. A full win returns 90 in profit. A half win returns 45 in profit, because half your stake wins and half is refunded. A half loss costs 50. A full loss costs 100.
What really happens on quarter lines
We counted the results in 14,607 league matches between July 2024 and October 2026 that carried a listed handicap line. These are the results on three common quarter lines:

On -0.75 the home side won 58% of its matches, but only 30% were a full win for the bet. On -1.25 the home side winning by one goal, which is the likeliest margin, costs you half your stake. These lines are designed so that the chance of a full win and a full loss are close to each other, and the half results are the buffer in between.
Why bookmakers use quarter lines
On a whole line, a one-goal margin that matches it is refunded, and in the lines near zero that happens a lot. Quarter lines remove the all-or-nothing refund and replace it with half results, which spreads the outcomes more finely.
Compare the draw. On a 0 line, a draw is a full refund, which happened in about 30% of the matches that carried a 0 line. On -0.25 the same draw costs half your stake, and on +0.25 it pays half. The choice between those three lines is mostly a choice about what a draw is worth to you.
How common are quarter lines
Close to half of all matches in our sample, about 49%, carried a quarter line. The -0.25 line alone was on 20% of matches.
-0.75 and +0.25 were each about 10%, -1.25 about 4% and +0.75 about 3%. Overall, about 14% of handicap bets ended in a refund.
Reading tomorrow’s predictions with the line
Say the table shows a predicted 1-0 and your bookmaker’s line is -0.75. That’s a half win. A predicted 2-0 is a full win, and a predicted 1-1 is a loss. If the line is +0.25 the same 1-1 prediction is a half win. A predicted 0-1 loses for the home side on every line worse than +1.
The usefulness of the score is limited, because a one-goal win is the commonest margin in football. In our sample, 51% of home wins were by exactly one goal.
Worked examples with scores
Take a match with a home line of -0.75 and a predicted score of 2-1. The home side wins by one goal, so you win half and have half refunded. If the line were -0.5, the same score would be a full win. If it were -1, it would be a refund.
Now take a line of +0.25 and a predicted 0-0. A draw wins half the stake on +0.25, so you’d collect a small profit. On a -0.25 line the same 0-0 would lose half. The score is identical and the outcome is not, which is why reading a handicap off the predicted score only works when you have the exact line in front of you.
Five rules we follow
- Know your line before you read the score. The same score can win, lose or split on different lines.
- On -0.75 and -1.25, a one-goal win matters. It’s the commonest margin.
- Expect refunds. About 14% of handicap bets are refunded or partly refunded.
- Treat 0 and +0.25 as draw cover. A draw pays something on both.
- Keep stakes small. Even on a 43% full-win line, you’ll lose or split more often than you win outright.
Common mistakes
The first is reading -0.75 as -0.5. They look alike but a one-goal win gets a full win on one and half a win on the other.
The second is forgetting that a draw is not a loss on +0.25. People see a 1-1 prediction and write it off. On a home +0.25 line it pays half.
The third is taking a favourite on -1.25 because it “usually wins”. It won 71% of the time, but a one-goal win, the commonest margin at 28%, cost half the stake.
Questions about quarter lines
What does -0.25 mean? Half your stake is on a level line, half on -0.5. A win pays in full, a draw loses half and a loss loses all.
What does +0.25 mean? Half on level, half on +0.5. A win pays, a draw wins half and a loss loses.
What does -0.75 mean? Half on -0.5 and half on -1. A two-goal win pays in full and a one-goal win pays half.
Can I lose half of a bet? Yes, on a quarter line. The other half is refunded.
Which line is the most common? -0.25, on about 20% of matches.
How are these different from 1X2? A handicap changes the result by adding goals to one side, so the draw becomes a refund or a half result.
